Technology

Horizon Academy is pleased to offer an iPad to every student and teacher for academic use.  Students in grades 8-12 will be able to take their iPad home, and are expected to take advantage of their iPad to complete classwork.  This program will help prepare our students to utilize digital devices in college and the workplace to work more effectively and organize their busy lives.

Students will take advantage of many apps falling in the following categories:

  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Communication
  • Research and Information Fluency
  • Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

Apple TV devices wirelessly integrate iPads into the classroom technology environment.

Every classroom is also outfitted with:

SMART Board

Using a SMART interactive whiteboard, students can physically interact with lessons by moving letters, numbers, words and pictures with their fingers. The SMART Board meets the needs of both visual and kinesthetic learners. It also improves accessibility for students with special needs by enabling them to see, read and manipulate information more easily.

Document Camera

The document camera acts as a digital overhead, allowing students and teachers to share and collaborate on classroom work.

Surround Sound Audio

Surround sound audio, with teacher/student microphones and computer/AV input, helps audio cut through the ambient noise in the classroom and lets students focus on important information.

Students enhance their learning through the following softwares:

Accelerated Reader

AR serves as the practice component of a comprehensive reading program by promoting personalized practice combined with data to monitor and manage that practice.

Lexia Core 5

Lexia stands as one of the most rigorously researched, independently evaluated, and respected reading programs in the world. In numerous studies published in peer-reviewed journals, Lexia has been found to accelerate the development of critical foundational literacy skills in the early grades.

Accelerated Math

Accelerated Math helps teachers personalize math practice, differentiate instruction, monitor progress, and make data-driven decisions to guide each student to success.

IXL

IXL provides comprehensive, standards-aligned math and language arts practice for K–12.

MathFacts in a Flash

Accelerated Math Fluency uses a variety of engaging tools to provide frequent, personalized practice. It eliminates paperwork, automatically scores students' work, and provides valuable performance data to support core instruction and intervention.

Google Apps for Education

Students learn to organize their work and lives with email, calendar, and Google Docs, a cloud-based productivity suite.

STAR Assessments

STAR assessments are the most widely used assessments in K12 schools. STAR assessments are computer adaptive, using sophisticated item calibration and psychometrics to dynamically adjust to each student’s unique responses.

Learning Ally

Learning Ally helps to empower students with dyslexia. Students are able to listen and track word progression as they read along with audiobooks using the VOICEtext system.
