Multisensory Math Workshop - Horizon Academy

Multisensory Math Workshop

This three day Multisensory Math Workshop is based on Marilyn Zecher’s Approach to supporting all students in mathematics. It offers evidence-based strategies from the Institute for Educational Science and the What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guides, but it is also an Orton Gillingham Approach to Math.

The workshop will be an intensive overview of the approach and will help educators support all types of students in inclusive classrooms. Originally developed for supporting students with language based learning deficits, it has expanded to include strategies from the Science of Learning and it is being used to support neurotypical and neurodivergent learners alike.

Topics will include the research and rationale behind the approach, developing numeracy, place value and basic operations, fraction concepts and operations, a multisensory lesson plan, and problem solving strategies that work.

Join us for 3-days of hands-on, engaging activities with take-home activities for your learning environment.

The 21-hour workshop includes both conceptual and explicit instruction in:

  • Teaching Numeracy and Subitizing
  • Place Value & Basic Operations – Addition/Subtraction
  • A conceptual foundation with explicit instruction in multiplication & Division
  • Scaffolding fluency development with strategies from the Science of Learning
  • Explicit Meaningful Instruction in Fraction and Decimal Concepts and Operations.
  • A Flexible OG based lesson plan
  • Strategies for Word Problems & Problem Solving.
  • Linkages to higher level content will be references.
