Back-To-School-Success: Building Home and School Routines that Last

Children, like adults, often start a project or goal, in this case the school year, strong and with good intentions. Somewhere along the way, we can lose sight of our goals and intentions and fall into previously learned habits and behaviors. This presentation by Horizon Academy’s School Psychologist, Tiffany Arrington, PhD, is aimed at helping parents and students set achievable goals that are motivational and meaningful. The session includes a formal presentation on motivation and goal setting, analyzing problem areas, and building reinforcements that are maintenance-free.

The Myth of Laziness: A New Understanding of Student Motivation

This session, presented by Horizon Academy’s School Psychologist, Tiffany Arrington, PhD, challenges parents to rethink using the word “lazy” to describe student behaviors. Using the latest neuropsychology research on executive functioning, learning, and mood, this session will help parents interpret student behavior in more meaningful and productive ways. By helping your student identify his or her areas of strength and deficits, while providing appropriate expectations, you can help your student learn to motivate themselves.

What is a Learning Disability Simulation?

Twice a year, Horizon Academy hosts a Learning Disability Simulation open to the public. This simulation is an eye-opening experience that aims to simulate different types of learning disabilities. Through this simulation, we try to help you understand and empathize what students with learning disabilities are going through each day in the classroom. At the end of the simulation we open up for discussion and offer suggestions for accommodations that may help students with LD.

We only host two simulations a year at Horizon Academy, but we can bring the simulation to your school or organization! Horizon Academy staff and volunteers will visit your school, community group, etc. at your preferred location and lead the simulation for a group of 20-48 participants. If you are interested in scheduling an LD Simulation, please contact Laura Mombello at lmombello@horizon-academy.com.

*Note: Due to our schedule during the beginning of the school year, we will be unable to host LD Simulations during the month of August. Thank you for understanding.
