At Horizon Academy, we focus on language-based learning disabilities. Our passion is helping students become effective learners and confident self-advocates. Our teachers specialize in activating and engaging the brain, teaching students new skills and enhancing their abilities. This dynamic method requires a combination of small classrooms, breakout groups and individualized instruction throughout the day.
Your gift to Horizon Academy will provide need-based scholarships, ensuring this specialized learning is accessible to more students. Horizon Academy is a 501(c)(3) organization and contributions to the school are tax-deductible upon compliance with the Internal Revenue Code.

In the fall, we will invite current and former parents, grandparents and friends to make a financial gift to the Horizon Academy scholarship fund. Individual donations are paramount to meeting the financial needs of our students. Our goal is to provide need-based assistance to those families who qualify. Cost should not be a barrier to students who need a specialized education. Gifts to the Annual Fund range from $10 to more than $10,000, and every gift moves us closer to our mission
A Signature Event for Dyslexia Awareness Month
Wednesday, October 1, 2025
7:30-9:00 a.m.
In celebration of Dyslexia Awareness Month, Horizon Academy invites you to join us for the inaugural Brilliantly Wired event—a morning of inspiration, conversation, and community focused on celebrating the brilliance of different minds.
Together, we’ll explore how learning differences can shape lives, spark creativity, and fuel success. Featured guests include: Jo Marie Scaglia, Kansas City restaurant owner and founder of The Mixx and Cafeteria Modern Cafe + Marketplace; Justin Antoniotti, President and General Manager of KMBC; and Marc Murphy (joining remotely from NYC), celebrity chef, Food Network personality, and author. All three guests will discuss their personal journeys with dyslexia.
Brilliantly Wired is more than stories of resilience. This event is about changing lives through science-based education and rewriting stories for the next generation of learners. This is an exclusive morning with high-impact leaders who think—and lead—differently. Seats are limited—this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.

A Novel Night brings our community together and celebrates a fun or fantastical piece of literature, and raises funds essential to helping Horizon Academy accomplish our mission. Past novels include: The Great Gatsby, True Grit, Harry Potter, and Alice in Wonderland. This year, we’ll explore a modern version of Greek mythology alongside Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Percy, who has dyslexia and ADHD, discovers he’s a demigod and has hidden superpowers. While our students may not be demigods, their powers flourish during their time at Horizon Academy. They become active, curious, and joyful students, and they grow into confident self-advocates.
The funds raised at A Novel Night support need-based scholarships, ensuring that more students are empowered to turn challenges into possibilities. You can support this event by becoming a sponsor, purchasing tickets, or donating an item to our auction.
Event details will be shared in the fall, but you can contact Cindy Wissinger (cwissinger@horizon-academy.com) or Lucy Rumsey (lrumsey@horizon-academy.com) for more information now.
