Teacher Training - Horizon Academy

Teacher Training

Advancing the understanding of specific procedures of the O-G Approach and the underlying principles in teaching reading, spelling, and vocabulary.

Teachers learn the principles of teaching students diagnosed with dyslexia or other language-based learning disabilities.

Orton-Gillingham Associate Training

This in-depth dyslexia training, co-taught by Orton-Gillingham Academy Fellows Gabi Guillory Welsh and Keely Rincon, advances educators’ understanding of dyslexia, specific procedures of the O-G Approach, and the underlying principles used to teach literacy skills to students with dyslexia.

Participants learn both the theory, grounded in the science of reading and learning, as well as the National Reading Panel’s five pillars of literacy instruction (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension), and the practice. Participants will complete the course having rehearsed lesson planning, lesson procedures, and instructional activities.

This course is intended for reading specialists, reading interventionists, and special educators. While classroom teachers benefit from the content taught in this course, the Associate practicum requires the instructor to tutor a one-on-one student at least twice a week for a minimum of 45 minutes on non-consecutive days for a minimum of 100 hours.

Orton-Gillingham Classroom Educator

This dyslexia and literacy training, co-taught by Orton-Gillingham Academy Fellows Gabi Guillory Welsh and Keely Rincon, builds educators’ understanding of dyslexia, specific procedures of the O-G Approach, and the underlying principles used to teach literacy skills in the general education, whole-classroom (Tier 1) setting or small group (Tier 2) setting.

Participants learn both the theory, grounded in the science of reading and learning, as well as the National Reading Panel’s five pillars of literacy instruction (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension), and the practice. Participants will complete the course having rehearsed lesson planning, lesson procedures, and instructional activities in Tier 1/Tier 2 settings.

This course is intended for general education classroom teachers. An optional and recommended practicum takes place following the coursework. The 50-hour practicum includes five observations over a minimum of 8 months.

We recommend that reading specialists, reading interventionists, and special educators pursue the Associate Level course, as it is designed explicitly for one-on-one intervention with dyslexic students.

Multisensory Math Workshop

This three day Multisensory Math Workshop is based on Marilyn Zecher’s Approach to supporting all students in mathematics. It offers evidence-based strategies from the Institute for Educational Science and the What Works Clearinghouse Practice Guides, but it is also an Orton Gillingham Approach to Math. The workshop will be an intensive overview of the approach and will help educators support all types of students in inclusive classrooms.

Originally developed for supporting students with language based learning deficits, it has expanded to include strategies from the Science of Learning and it is being used to support neurotypical and neurodivergent learners alike.

Topics will include the research and rationale behind the approach, developing numeracy, place value and basic operations, fraction concepts and operations, a multisensory lesson plan, and problem solving strategies that work.  Join us for 3-days of hands-on, engaging activities with take-home activities for your learning environment.
