Does your child need extra support? Tutoring through Horizon Academy’s Learning Center offers students the extra help they need at our main campus and at a location in southern Johnson County. Sessions are offered during the school day as well as during after school hours. We have both school year and summer tutoring programs available that offer Orton-Gillingham-based tutoring, Multisensory Math tutoring, and Supportive Tutoring for the development of executive functioning skills.
Testing documentation with your student’s diagnoses is highly recommended, but not required.
Horizon Academy offers on-site, one-on-one tutoring sessions using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Orton-Gillingham is an instructional approach intended primarily for use with persons who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing due to challenges with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. This multisensory approach is diagnostic, prescriptive, systematic, structured and personalized to meet the needs of the learner.
Orton-Gillingham interventionists have been trained in the approach by a Fellow from the Orton-Gillingham Academy and continue to work under the Fellow’s guidance to ensure the quality of service provided.
Horizon Academy also offers Multisensory Math tutoring. This approach applies Orton-Gillingham multisensory instructional strategies to mathematics. Multisensory Math tutoring provides hands-on work with manipulative objects and is recommended for students of all ages. It enhances both concept integration and memory. This approach is especially important for LD students and also for those with conceptual gaps.
Our interventionists have been trained in Multisensory Math instruction by Marilyn Zecher, M.A., CALT, who is the creator of the Multisensory Math program.
If you are interested in tutoring for your child, the first step is to contact the Learning Center Coordinator for more information about interventionist availability and to discuss your student’s challenges and strengths. You will be asked to submit your child’s diagnostic or school reports.
You can call us at (913) 789-9443.
Once a student is prequalified for services, the next step is the completion of a Tutoring Center application and to submit a $30 application fee. Both the application and the fee payment can be done through the below link. Once we have received your application, the Learning Center Coordinator will contact you to discuss days/times for tutoring sessions.
