Unsure Where to Start?
Why We Require a Diagnosis
At Horizon Academy in Kansas City, our mission is to support students with primary diagnoses of dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia because our school model is built for language-based learning disabilities. Unlike traditional schools that may only offer supplemental support services, Horizon Academy uses specialized instruction to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of students who learn differently.

Primary Diagnoses
Every aspect of our program supports students with dyslexia and related learning disabilities. Our faculty uses approaches such as the Orton-Gillingham Approach, multisensory instruction, executive function development, and structured writing and math interventions. Because of this highly-trained specialization, we are best equipped to serve students with language-based learning disabilities.
Co-Occurring Diagnoses
Students with additional diagnoses may still be considered for admission if we can support those needs within our educational environment. However, Horizon Academy is not equipped to provide intensive therapeutic, behavioral, emotional, or one-on-one paraprofessional support throughout the school day. Students must be able to participate independently within a small-group classroom setting and engage cooperatively with their peers and teachers.
Pre-Admissions Screening
Our admissions process ensures that Horizon Academy is the right fit for both the individual student and the overall school community. Prospective students take part in a screening that includes brief evaluations in reading, writing, spelling, and math, allowing our admissions committee to better understand each child’s current skills and learning profile.
After reviewing screening results and diagnostic reports, the committee determines the most appropriate next steps, which may include admission, additional testing, a shadow visit, or participation in a summer program. This thorough process helps every student receive the specialized support they need to thrive.
