Horizon Academy is conducting free screenings for parents of children 4-6 years of age who are at risk for dyslexia.

Horizon Academy is conducting free screenings for parents of children 4-6 years of age who are at risk for dyslexia. The screenings are available during October and November 2024.

Step One. Fill out the form online. https://shorturl.at/W9osa

Step Two. Horizon Academy reaches out to do the informal screening with the parent, who answers questions about the child over the phone.

Step Three. Horizon Academy shares information and recommendations that may be of value based on the screening results.

More information about the screening: Horizon Academy provides free dyslexia screenings through a brief 10-minute phone interview with parents. The phone screening is a series of 10 questions that assess a student's risk for dyslexia and is intended for parents of children ages 4-6.

This informal screening helps parents identify risk factors of dyslexia and provides parents with actionable recommendations such as increasing literacy exposure, introducing new intervention strategies, or pursuing an in-depth evaluation.

Background Information

Early Intervention is Best, Yet Early Diagnosis is a Challenge

A recent study published by the Journal of Educational Psychology found that students at risk for reading disabilities who received intervention in the first and second grades made gains nearly twice that of children who didn’t receive intervention until the third grade.

Furthermore, the reading outcomes for first graders who received intervention were even greater than that of their second-grade peers, further proving the importance of early detection of dyslexia. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2017-13234-001

So, early intervention is best, yet testing for an official dyslexia diagnosis doesn’t happen until students are between second and fourth grades.

That is why these screenings for parents of younger children can prove helpful.
