Kat graduated high school this spring (2018) and is planning to attend junior college in the fall. She loves singing classical music and her current voice instructor thinks she should be a professional opera singer! She was brave enough to audition for two high school musicals this year, and got parts in both.

Ben Bohanan

Ben graduated from The Plaza Academy this past May (2018) and has already begun taking a summer course at Penn Valley. He plans to continue attending classes at Penn Valley in the fall, while also maintaining his job at Price Chopper. He hopes to transfer to another school after finishing his prerequisite courses to pursue a career in dermatology.

Jordan Smith Whitmore

I am excited to have graduated the University of Missouri Kansas City with a bachelor of liberal arts with a minor in psychology. I recently joined the Kansas City Woodworkers Guild, and I am excited to have the opportunity to be creative and make functional pieces at the same time. I hope to continue my education in American Sign Language with a few supplementary classes over the summer. I am also working on applications for an occupational therapy assistant program in the fall.

Joseph Leiter

Joseph Leiter attended Horizon Academy from 2006-2009. Since leaving our school, he graduated from Emporia State University with a degree in Rehabilitation Services Education, and is now pursuing a masters at the same university in Rehab Counseling. He is putting his studies into action working at JobOne, a vocational services organization serving people with disabilities in Grandview. He has many roles there including employment specialist, career counselor, and job developer. He is also involved with the Independence Kiwanis and, recently, the Belton Chamber of Commerce. He fondly remembers talent shows, hour-long PE classes, and his many great teachers at Horizon Academy.…

Brad Clark

Brad Clark, one of Horizon Academy’s first students attending from 2001-2003, has come a long way since his days at Horizon. He now works as a project manager for DHI Roofing, which keeps him busy working 7 days a week and moving him all over the country. He considers his biggest accomplishment  being successful in school. “I learned how to read there [Horizon Academy], which is pretty paramount to being successful in life and learning how to do basic things.” Brad studied Political Science with an emphasis in Geopolitical Conflicts before starting his job with DHI.

Nick Vera

Upon leaving Horizon Academy, Nick transitioned to Shawnee Mission West, where he joined the wrestling team. At a recent wrestling banquet, Nick was awarded 3 awards including Junior Varsity Wrestler of the Year and the Bill Leonard Award for Outstanding Academics, which acknowledged his 4.15 GPA!

“Since graduating from Horizon Academy in 2006, I went on to receive my high school diploma from Bishop Miege in 2010. By 2014 I received my bachelor’s degree in Geology with a minor in Mathematics from Western State Colorado University. I am currently working as a Geologist for Black & Veatch here in Kansas City. Dylan Boster

Dylan is starting his freshman year at Columbia College Chicago where he is majoring in Film. He co-write and directed a 1 act musical at Miege last year. This past summer, he wrote and co-shot a short horror film with some of his Columbia College friends that won a regional student film award. He also won an award for best sound at last year’s Kansas 24-Hour High School Film Festival.
